I was reading Moments with the Savior by Ken Gire at the airport yesterday. It has to be my all time favorite book, besides the Bible. Ken Gire has a way of making scripture come alive! He uses such great descriptions that I can see, hear, smell, and feel the stories.
I decided to read about the Birth of Christ and couldn't get away from Gabriel's visit to Mary. This heavenly host came to a humble, young Jewish virgin with the message that would change the world. Mary never doubts Gabriel's words, she just wants to know how, after all she was a virgin. After further explanation, Mary says "I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said."
As the words came from her mouth Mary opened herself to great risk. Who would believe her? Joseph? Her mother? The ladies at the well? Maybe no one would believe. But that didn't keep Mary from believing. Her faith was courageous. She would submit to God. Regardless of the questions it would raise. Regardless of the cost. Or the consequences. Regardless if it meant losing her reputation. Or the man she loved. Even her very life. Maybe it was this "regardless" quality that made her most suited to the task of raising such a wonderful promise, our Savior.
I cannot imagine what my life would look like if I obeyed in such ways. Not doubting, just saying "I am the Lord's servant, may it be to me as you have said."
