My chimney has a nest in the top of it. This is a new construction since I was last on the roof, removed the old nest, and put a cover on the chimney. The birds around here must be little contractors in the making because they figured out how to get the cap off and continue to build in our chimney. So in the past few months we have had a series of bird invasions into the house through the fireplace. Today's story wins the prize for the best bird story.
My mom and I have grown used to the sound of a bird (hereafter called Leonard) in the fireplace and so has Jackson. He pretty much ignores it now, but not our little 4-legged visitor. Brandi, Brighton and the newest Brown, Pixie, were here. Somehow or another we all left the room and left the two "Bird" dogs alone in the room with the fireplace. Pixie managed to pull the doors open and catch Leonard, in stealth mode, none of us heard it . After a few minutes Brandi and I decided that it was a little too quiet and that we had better check in on our dogs. (Today was the first day that they got to play together. It was one of the sweetest and fun things I have seen in a while. They are so much fun!) Well Brandi found Pixie with the bird in her mouth and started screaming for help. I guess this freaked out Pixie and she dropped BIRD who then started flying into EVERY window in the house. Eventually Leonard started crashing into walls and furniture, leaving blood splats on everything it hit. Meanwhile Brighton is standing in a chair in the kitchen yelling at us "It's in here, it's in here.", Jackson is acting like this happens everyday, and Pixie is running around trying to get her mouth back on Leonard, "the grown-ups" (me, Mom, and Brandi) are running around with all kinds of objects in our hands trying to open windows. CHAOS!
After about 7 or 8 blood marks on the wall Leonard flies into the front room and we can't find it. Brandi and Mom promise it was in there and I am convinced that Leonard is perched in my room somewhere waiting for me to fall asleep to make its next move. After about an hour of looking we finally find Leonard camping out, half dead, in a plant near the front door. Brandi and I decide that we will cover the whole plant with a sheet and move it outside. Just as we were about to make our move Leonard flies out. AUGH! This time we were well prepared, we had blocked off all exits except the front door. Leonard finally left. Again CHAOS! After Leonard left we spent about 10 minutes cleaning the walls and windows of all blood splats, how gross.
So the moral of the story... BIRDS ARE SCARY!
Can you imagine the story that BIRD has for his friends and family?!?!? HA!
